So on 11 February, we had a go with the speed-workshopping model we'll be using at the unConference, though we did it in lieu of our typical Wednesday PD sessions. It was interesting and gave everyone a chance to try out their pitch and gave some of us a chance to experience the "law of two feet" in action. All of the feedback was very good, and some of the most thrilling for me were those comments about how they liked the idea of only going to things that were interesting to them, and how they wished they had more time in between to soak things in. Anyway, below I've copied the brief introduction video to that experience. I'll post some more tips and feedback in the next couple of days.

Greetings Learning InnovatEd Educator!
Welcome to the first ever CEESA unConference! Have you ever been to a conference and came away feeling that the most valuable part of it was the networking you did over coffee, around the lunch table, or at the reception? Well, we wanted to create an event that would be all about those moments, making it as memorable and fun as possible; something you could walk away from and truly feel inspired to share with others what you had learned. One way to do this is to let the attendees organise and structure the conference, making as unlike a traditional conference as possible; hence, unconference. Instead of passive attendance, watching presentations, unconference attendees and organisers are encouraged to participate, volunteering to lead discussions and mini-seminars to provide relevance and structure. A sample unconference agenda looks like this:
The structure of each workshop varies depending on the theme of the unconference, but we suggest that you come prepared with a shorter version (15-20 minutes) for the morning, and a longer version (45-60 minutes) for the afternoon. We recommend workshop structures along one of the following models (though coming up with your own is okay too):
These workshops are often just long enough to pique the interest of attendees, spark those quality conversations, and make those top-notch connections with like-minded educators to motivate further collaboration. Our hope is that by putting motivated individuals like yourself together in a room, and providing you the space to innovate, these connections will provide the foundation for deeper collaboration across the CEESA network of schools. The main thing to keep in mind for this type of conference is that everyone participates in some way and is responsible for their own learning. In unconference terms, we use the rule of two feet: if you aren't interested, you may walk away at any time. The reason being that your disinterest is not valuable to the facilitator or your own learning. |
